Jonava „Lietava "basic school started its work in 1937 as the primary school at the railway station. Later, the school was restructed into a seven - year school, then an eight - year school and after that ,a secondary school. From 1st September, 2001 Jonava 3rd Secondary School was reorganized into a basic school, under the order No. 3 of Jonava District Municipality Council on 27th January, 2000. From 1st September, 2001 the school is called Jonava „Lietava“ basic school, the order No. 108, 19th July, 2001.
Not only the status of the school but also the building itself had been changing. In 1952 two belongings were built in 2 additions, later in 1974 another extension was added. 29 crops graduated our school. There are a good number of people whose work and achievements we are proud of. For a long time there worked such great teachers of experience as Mrs A. Gulbinienė -the Lithuanian language and literature teacher, Mrs E. Želnienė -the chemistry teacher, Mrs B. Bielinienė –the maths teacher. The history teacher Mrs J. Didvalienė devoted herself to teaching at school for more than 50 years . For many years, there worked the physical education teachers N. and J. Mažeikos.
Since 1962 the school was directed by Mr Kazys Šerėnas. In 2000 Mr Kestutis Jakštas, who formerly was a pupil of the school, held the headmaster position. He officiated unti July 2010. Since November 2010 the school is being headed by Mrs Ina Skurdelienė. Over the last years the school management system has being changed. It has become more democratic. A number of young teachers joined the team. The school counsil and students‘ parliament take part in dealing with educational issues as well as students' parents. Every year traditional events and various short-term / long-term projects are held where the teachers and students reveal their creativity. Moreover, the students participate in numerous regional events, contests or competitions.
